How to set up indexing

On the Features page, select Windows Search Service, and add the service.

Trouble shooting problems with default paths in indexing

If for whatever reason after restarting the indexing service and opening the indexing options you see more folders than the one/ones you have added you will need to apply a fix in group policy

Open group policy editor by typing gpedit.msc then go to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components - Search and find the below

- Prevent automatically adding shared folders to the index (enable)

- Default excluded paths
(enable and add all the paths that appeared in the indexing without you selecting them, the path should start eg. C:UsersShares)

- Prevent indexing in certain paths
(enable and add all the paths that appeared in the indexing without you selecting them, the path should start eg. C:UsersShares)

Then go to:

Under User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components - Search and find the below

Again restart the search service and rebuild the index, all the extra folders will now have disappeared from the indexing options.
